A Brief Analysis of the Soil Plug Effect in PHC Pipe Piles
Pile foundations have a long history of use and are widely employed. During pile driving, as the pile penetrates deeper, the soil plug forced into the pipe pile continues to rise. Once it reaches a certain height, plugging occurs due to the friction between the inner wall of the pipe pile and the soil plug, whereby the soil plug bears part of the pile tip bearing capacity; this phenomenon is known as the "soil plug effect." The value of the pile tip bearing capacity borne by the soil plug is called the "soil plug effect value." The soil plug effect value is related to factors such as soil properties, pipe diameter, wall thickness, and the penetration depth of the pile, and it affects the load transfer of the pipe pile as well as the vertical ultimate bearing capacity of the pile.
