Several Studies on the Methods for Determining the Characteristic Value of Subgrade Bearing Capacity
The foundation design of any building must satisfy the requirements for subgrade bearing capacity, deformation, and stability. The 2002 edition of the Code for Design of Building Foundations introduced the term "characteristic value of subgrade bearing capacity" to denote the values of subgrade bearing capacity and single-pile bearing capacity used in calculations for the serviceability limit state. When determining subgrade bearing capacity, in addition to ensuring the strength and stability of the subgrade, the settlement and differential settlement of the building must also be controlled. Its determination is complex and influenced by numerous factors, such as the properties of the subgrade soil, external loads, the type of foundation, the embedment depth, and groundwater, all of which affect the magnitude of the bearing capacity. Subgrade bearing capacity directly affects the safety and normal use of buildings. Therefore, when selecting a method for determining bearing capacity, a comprehensive determination should be made using accurate and reasonable methods, so as to achieve both safety and reliability as well as economic rationality.
